Abstract
Shoulder is one of the most common sites of pain in outpatient department of orthopedic surgery, and allows for almost unrestrained motion in all planes due to very unique anatomical structure. There are various different conditions that can lead to pain around shoulder and periscapular area. Common causes of the pain are adhesive capsulitis, impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tear, calcific tendinitis, acromioclavicular (AC) joint arthritis, instability, myofascial pain syndrome, and scapular dyskinesis. Also cervical radiculopathy, lung, cardiac and abdominal problems should be considered as a cause of pain around shoulder and periscapular area. Detailed history taking and special physical examination based on basic anatomical and kinesiological knowledge are important for precise patient evaluation. For satisfactory treatment outcome, it is important to understand the shoulder pathophysiology and then the treatment method must be decided based on these understandings. Treatment depends on the cause and can include physical therapy, injection therapy and surgery.
